The University of King’s College is seeking a full-time instructor for a half-year limited-term appointment from July 1 to Dec. 31, 2024.
This instructor will teach introductory reporting and intermediate-level public records research courses in the Fall term of the 2024-25 academic year. These courses — JOUR 2700.03 Introduction to Reporting and JOUR 3004.03 Advanced Reporting 1 — will be delivered in person to students enrolled in the four-year Bachelor of Journalism Honours program.
Teaching Competency
In these courses, students learn to:
- Recognize, find and pitch a local news story
- Conduct a professional interview
- Analyze simple statistics for news value
- Use basic database resources and public records for journalism research
- Incorporate principles and practices of verification
- Write an original, focused news story, incorporating research material to create insight and meaning
- File and follow a freedom-of-information request
- Use a spreadsheet application to perform data analysis relevant to journalism
- Navigate journalism ethics with confidence and integrity
Teaching Duties
- Develop a course syllabus containing clear and challenging learning objectives and assessments
- Prepare engaging lectures, exercises and assignments based on those objectives
- Inspire students to excellence and rigour in their work
- Grade assignments promptly
- Be available to students for consultation on course work, outcomes and expectations
- Deliver instruction in accordance with policies of the University of King’s College and the School of Journalism, Writing and Publishing — including the School’s Handbook of Professional Practice
- Establish and maintain course materials in the university’s learning management system, Brightspace
Qualifications
Required:
- An undergraduate degree. (A graduate degree would be an asset.)
- A minimum of seven years recent experience working as a journalist
- Advanced research skills (interviewing, freedom of information, public records)
- Strong news writing skills
- Deep knowledge of Canadian Press style
- The legal right to work in Canada
Preferred:
- A track record of successful teaching or mentoring at the post-secondary level
- Recent experience working as a news reporter or editor
- Experience in audio or video broadcast journalism
Compensation
The University of King’s College offers competitive compensation commensurate with qualities and experience. This position does not include benefits.
Depending on experience and background, other course configurations may be available.
